onLondon

London is the world's greatest city, its mix of culture, finance, entertainment, sport and history is unparalleled anywhere. Here are some developments in the pipeline, not all good unfortunately. If you can think of more that should be mentioned, do let me know.

  • An extraordinarily grotesque proposal for yet another megalith that is Beetham's Blackfriar's Tower. This one is right by the Thames on Blackfriars Road. Skyscrapers work in clusters, not in this haphazard planless manner. Many of these towers are stabbed right in to the heart of London. Aggressive thoughtless actions. Fight it, Fight them!

  • Tate Modern wants to grows up and out in a most jaggedly way. Read about it on the Tate's own site.

  • The Victoria Line is soon to get new carriages. More fold up seats and fortunately a typically tube like textile.

  • A tedious looking proposal to replace the Swiss Centre between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. If this happens it is a wasted opportunity.

  • Promising looking plans for Jubilee Gardens between The London Eye and The Royal Festical Hall

  • Potter's Field towers. A horrendous proposal for this prime site. It would if approved complete the grotesque wall of glass and steel suffocating the South Bank opposite The Tower. Southwark council, in an unusual move, have seen what an error this would be and instead want a cultural item built on the site. Fingers crossed.

  • The Royal Festival Hall buff up

  • Battersea Power Station's rebirth as something not much like the original.

  • The misuse of the Millennium Dome and the Greenwich Peninsula

  • Bye bye Hackney - Hello Olympic London 2012

  • The disappointingly ugly (from the outside at least) Wembley Stadium

  • What looks to be a mostly positive redevelopment of King's Cross

Past links
Time for a new set of links, this time on the planned destruction of London. Do all and anything you can to support campaigns against these ridiculous schemes. With half of Spitalfield's market lost recently and many other historic parts threatened by characterless, easy buildings, usually with Ken's blessing, voices are needed. At this rate the UK will soon be one great glass and steel cuboid!
