A select list of London galleries in order of must visitness. See some wonderful art from the ages.
The National Gallery A sublime collection of Western European art. Certainly not the world's largest collection, the gallery containts something over 2300 paintings, but see the quality. Especially strong in renaisance art and you will find all the big names present, Raphael, Rembrandt, Holbein, Monet, Van Gogh, Rubens, Turner and so on. An absolute must. More
Tate Britain This is another absolute essential for any tourist in London, or resident for taht matter. Tate Modern may have grabbed the headlines and welcomed the hoardes, but when in Britain, see British art. The Tate has the largest collection of British art anywhere (and rightly so). This wonderful gallery displays its collection in chronologial order giving plenty of space to the greats; Hilliard, Marcus Gheeraerts II, Constable, Turner, Blake, Spencer, Stubbs, Bacon, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Rosetti, Millais and much much more.
Tate Modern Now, much of Tate Modern's display is not gallery material, it is not art, it would be more suited a museum of pschological manifestaions and con artistry, but there is also a lot of respectable art too, and so I list it here. Take a visit and feel free to laugh and point at the rubbish whilst also marvelling at works by Piccasso, Dali, Matisse and other masters. More
Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery One of the most important art collections in Britain, including world-famous Old Master and Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, together with sculpture and applied arts. If you want to see impressionism and post impressionism, this is quite probably a better bet than Tate Modern. More.
